Cannon Honor Graduate Emily Dye’s Journey: How Cannon Trust School Shaped My Career in Trust Administration
When Emily Dye joined Cumberland Trust fresh out of college, she could never have imagined how quickly her career would take shape. Starting as a bright-eyed trust specialist, Emily worked her way up to become a trust officer, now managing high-net-worth families and mentoring new hires. But this journey wasn’t just about hard work—it was guided by the formal training, networking, and confidence she gained through Cannon Trust School.
Emily is more than just a success story; she’s a 2024 Fran DeMaris Award Nominee and Cannon Honor Graduate. Her experience illustrates how Cannon’s programs help students develop not only technical knowledge but also the leadership and confidence needed to thrive.

Emily’s journey into the trust industry wasn’t traditional. Growing up in Alabama, she pursued a degree in Human Development and Family Science at the University of Georgia. Initially considering graduate school or a career in healthcare administration, she instead followed an unexpected path that perfectly aligned with her education.
“During my first interview, Pepe Presley, CEO at the time, pointed out that my background was relevant to their work,” Emily recalls. “Half of the job is about trusts and financial services, but the other half is client relationship management and understanding family dynamics. We often work with clients during emotional times—like the loss of a family member or navigating blended family situations. My background gave me a better understanding of those dynamics.”
Emily joined Cumberland just four months before the COVID-19 pandemic. “Starting out was often compared to drinking from a fire hose,” she laughs. “I tried to be a sponge, absorbing as much as possible.” While she felt she had little to offer other than organizational skills at first, her eagerness to learn quickly paid off.
Her hands-on experience was complemented by Cannon’s Trust School. “Cannon provided me with a formal setting to learn the trust business, complementing the on-the-job experience I had,” she explains. “The combination of both was pivotal to my development.”
Emily’s Cannon journey began with Trust 1 and Trust 2 online, followed by Trust 3 in person at Hilton Head. Each course elevated her ability to contribute more meaningfully at Cumberland.
“Each time I took a course, it boosted my confidence and decision-making ability,” she says. “The structured curriculum, combined with Cannon’s reputation, helped me approach challenges with a stronger foundation.”
But it wasn’t just the learning that stood out. The in-person experience at Hilton Head left a lasting impression. “I loved the opportunity to meet other students, network, and form personal connections,” Emily reflects. “The discussions over meals and during breaks enriched the experience. It stuck with me more than I expected.”
Her dedication led her to earn her CTFA™ designation, a milestone she describes as a source of self-assurance. “Even if clients don’t directly comment on the letters behind my name, the confidence it gives me likely puts them at ease,” she notes.
For Emily, the trust industry offers a unique blend of technical challenges and emotional fulfillment.
“Finances can be a large stressor, but when we help clients with estate planning or legacy concerns, we provide them with peace of mind,” she says. “Knowing that our work impacts families through different stages of life is incredibly rewarding.”
She also finds joy in mentoring new hires and sharing practical tips to make their work easier. “Teaching someone a simple trick that saves them 15 minutes is rewarding,” she explains. “It’s these small improvements that make a big difference.”
Reflecting on her own journey, Emily acknowledges the many mentors who have shaped her path, including her manager, Sloan Shell. “I’ve been fortunate to have people invest in me, offering guidance, support, and encouragement along the way,” she says. “Sloan, in particular, has set an example of getting to know her clients and colleagues with a deep understanding of people. Watching how she navigates challenges and supports our team has influenced the way I approach my own growth and how I mentor others.”
When asked what advice she would give to those entering the trust industry, Emily emphasizes curiosity and collaboration.
“Be a sponge. Ask questions. Sit in on as many calls and meetings as you can,” she advises. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Eventually, things will start clicking, and you’ll gain confidence.”
For those intimidated by the complexity of the trust business, Emily offers reassurance. “The trust industry is a wonderful career where you get to help people and be challenged. With the right attitude, anyone can learn and succeed.”
Emily is optimistic about her future at Cumberland.
“We’ve experienced significant growth, and I see myself continuing in a role that allows me to think strategically and contribute to our team’s development,” she shares. Her passion for training and development remains strong, and she is eager to explore new opportunities as Cumberland expands.
Emily credits much of her professional growth to Cannon’s programs and the support she received along the way.
“I’m so grateful for my Cannon experience and the opportunities it has provided,” she says. “Cumberland’s strong relationship with Cannon has made a lasting impact on my career.”
Her journey is a testament to the power of learning, collaboration, and mentorship—values that Cannon instills in its students.
