Mentorship isn’t about finding a hero; it’s about recognizing perspective. In this episode of Monday Morning Mojo, Phil continues his three-part series on a life well lived by focusing on the quiet power of mentors. Drawing from timeless wisdom and the biblical example of Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy, Phil reminds us that true mentors emerge when curiosity, humility, and respect meet experience. This conversation reframes mentorship as an invitation rather than a transaction, challenging listeners to stop chasing titles and start asking better questions.

Top performers in every field surround themselves with those who inspire them, who seek to build them up, and who push them to reach beyond their current limits. I am Phil Buchanan, executive chairman of Cannon Financial Institute. I designed Monday Morning Mojo to provide you with a weekly spark, a push and motivational insight to live your best life.

Thanks for joining. Good Monday morning, Cannon Nation. It is Phil here with episode 741 of Monday Morning Mojo. Today is the second part in a three-part series on a circle of life well lived and the people that need to be a part of it. If you have not listened to episode 740, I challenge you to go back and listen to that before beginning episode 741.

The conversation today on a Life well lived focuses on mentors. Mentors are not superheroes. Heck, mentors aren't anywhere close to being perfect. Also, mentors rarely self-announce themselves. Often there are simply people who have walked a little further down the road than we ourselves may have walked.

Another kind of mistake, I guess that you could say that I see people tending to make around mentorship is they try to create mentors. Mentors emerge. They are not recruited. True mentors emerge when you're asking thoughtful questions. When you listen more than you speak, when you respect experience without idolizing, you apply what you were given.

We gave the biblical reference last week to Paul and Barnabas and Timothy. If you go back and you read that story, Paul didn't chase Barnabas for status. Barnabas noticed Paul's potential and chose to invest. Mentorship is an invitation, not a transaction. Now let's talk about a mentor's real role in your life.

And I guess we start with mentors aren't there to give you answers to every question. What they do provide, however, is perspective, especially when you're too close to the situation to be able to see it. Clearly, they can offer courage when we are hesitant. They can offer a bit of course correction when we're drifting.

Perhaps most importantly, they've got the ability to offer wisdom when experience really matters. Their role is to help us avoid mistakes. Sure. But more importantly, they help us to interpret our mistakes. That's where real learning comes from. But you know, here's the paradox. Mentors often influence you most when they stop trying to control outcomes.

Now. In order for the mentorship process to work, you have to receive mentorship well, so the value of a mentor is only unlocked by the posture you take. See, mentors tend to invest more deeply in people who, number one, are teachable and coach. Number two, people who take responsibility and accountability.

Number three, individuals who act on advice in counsel, perhaps, again, most importantly, individuals who don't waste the wisdom of the mentor in their life, if you will. Mentors in your life live like someone worth mentoring. Think about that. In the next episode, we'll turn to peer accountability partners, the people who walk beside you, not ahead of you in life.
