Episode 723 - Attack the Day
What if the secret to a powerful day started with your first sip of coffee? In this episode of Monday Morning Mojo, Phil explores how simple morning habits, from that aromatic brew to a few mindful minutes of learning, can ignite focus, curiosity, and purpose. Drawing inspiration from UGA coach Kirby Smart’s mantra to “attack the day,” Phil reveals how small rituals can build lasting momentum, sharpen perspective, and infuse each morning with clarity and intention. Because when you start your day deliberately, everything that follows rises to meet that energy.

Good Monday morning friends. It is Phil here with episode 723 of Monday Morning Mojo. Monday Morning Mojo is the podcast where we examine and celebrate the simple yet powerful perspectives that can set the tone for the rest of our day and the rest of our week. If you're listening with a travel mug of coffee in hand and a curious mind, well, you're in the right place for today's conversation because today we're gonna talk about a ritual that is as cherished as it is universal.
Sipping a morning cup of coffee, catching up in the news, learning something new, and then being fully charged, attacking the day. So let's start with the first step, the coffee. What is it about the aroma of a freshly brewed coffee? Is it WAFs through the kitchen? It promises some warmth and some clarity, of course, except for those that love it iced.
See, for many coffee isn't just about caffeine. It's an invitation to not only pause and reflect before the rush of our day, but it has become a deeply personal expression. Almost an extension of our identity. I mean, think about it from a double shot espresso to a precisely crafted oak milk latte, or even a cold brew with a splash of something sweet.
The choices are endless and are uniquely tailored by the individual. So much like other aspects of today's life, coffee has become a canvas for our personalization. It allows each of us to start our day in a way that feels truly our own. So whether it is a steaming mug or a cold brew, you're not just waking your body, you're awakening your senses and your intentions for your day.
Now that you got your coffee in hand, it's time to open the newspaper. For those that still read the newspaper, maybe scroll through your favorite news app, or maybe it's even listening to a news podcast. This daily check-in connects us to the wider world. But here is an important tip that I, I really wanna challenge our listeners on.
Make it a habit to gather your news from a variety of different sources. Don't rely on just one outlet, or even more importantly, just one perspective. When we explore different publications, channels, and viewpoints, it ensures that our understanding of the world is balanced and well-rounded. Diverse sources mean you're less likely to get stuck in an echo chamber or miss out on important angles Now.
You read the headlines, you dive into the stories, and you learn what's enfolding beyond our doorstep when we do this. Now the world can sometimes feel overwhelming, but having a sense of what's happening keeps us informed and engaged, but don't be so locked into the news 24/7. Again, for most of us, what we do on a day-to-day basis is not dependent on the latest 32nd news cycle soundbite.
And sometimes putting it aside after that morning's review actually allows us to concentrate on what's really important now. Once you've scanned the news and before you rush into your daily to-do list, I wanna challenge you all to set aside 15 minutes spent on learning, learning something new, or extending your learning in an area that's passionate for you.
It could be a language lesson, a science video, the biography of some historical figure. Maybe it's a quick podcast on a topic that you've been curious about. But these 15 minutes, which by the way only comprise 1% of your total day, these 15 minutes of learning are an investment in yourself. Again, you're not only waking up your mind, you're building a habit of curiosity that leads to unexpected insights and inspirations throughout your day, throughout your week.
So with the coffee finish, the mind awake of the curiosity spark, you're ready to attack the day. Now, this is a phrase I'm barring from University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart. Kirby points out that attacking the day doesn't mean you're rushing headlong into stress, but rather you are approaching your commitments with energy and focus.
You've nourished both your body and your mind. Now you're prepared to face challenges, solve problems, and sees opportunities. That morning ritual isn't just about comfortable, it's your launchpad. So tomorrow morning as you cradle your cup of coffee and greet the sunrise, remember, small rituals can have a huge impact.
Savor your coffee, make it just the way you love it. Stay informed with a diversity of perspectives. Keep learning and attack your day with purpose. You'll be amazed at what you'll accomplish when you start your morning with intention.
