Good Monday morning. It is Phil here with episode 708 of Monday Morning Mojo. In doing my research for this podcast, I used my iPad. During the time I was researching, I received several texts and two phone calls on my iPhone. Now, both products are obviously produced by the Apple Corporation.

These tools are almost always within arm's length of me at least 17, 18 hours a day. Tim Cook is Apple’s CEO, and in most estimations, has done an excellent job in leading that company since 2011. Prior to his tenure, apple was led by the famous Steve Jobs from 1997 until 2011. Now the styles of leadership of jobs was very different than that of Cook, yet both have served Apple shareholders, employees, and clients very well. But it was Steve Jobs who saved Apple from disaster and unleashed an era of creativity and growth that really was unprecedented.

Cook has taken that success and elevated it even further, but back to Jobs. He was a visionary and an imagineer at a time Apple was floundering. His creativity and power of public persuasion introduced the world to possibilities most hadn't even considered possible. A quote by jobs held that the most powerful person in business is a gifted storyteller. At this, Jobs was elite.

He was deeply technical. He knew how to perfect products. Yet he also was extremely gifted at explaining the true value of Apple's innovations. In 2001, there were multiple MP3 players available on the market. Yet, in October of that year, Apple introduced the iPod, which by functionality produced what other MP3 players already did. Yet Jobs, in introducing the iPod, challenged the world to an, I quote, “imagine 1000 songs in your pocket”. From that simple statement, a legacy was insured.

A 10-year-old or an 80-year-old could relate to the concept of a thousand songs in your pocket. Further due to his technical focus, the iPod was simple, it was sleek. Now, the iPod evolved and was eventually replaced by the iPhone in 2007. Now again, there were plenty of alternatives for phones and messaging at that time. Remember the BlackBerry? How about the LG flip phone? Yet, jobs set forth a vision of a simple personal device of multiple capabilities that could streamline your life.

Now, today there are still standalone phones, standalone MP three player standalone cameras, but Apple, in its combination of these tools within the iPhone is the dominant global player.

Would that have been the case without the storyteller, Steve Jobs? Maybe, but I actually think it's not likely. I want you to think about your business. Are you the only one that can do what you do professionally? Respectfully, the answer is no. Are you the only one who truly cares about clients? Again, the answer is no.

So, my question to you is, what is the story that you tell that differentiates you in the mind's eye of the client? It's not about comparing your story with others; it's about your ability to create a vision for your clients that they want to be a part of. Challenge your clients to imagine.
