Top performers in every field surround themselves with those who inspire them, who seek to build them up, and who push them to reach beyond their current limits. I'm Phil Buchanan, Executive Chairman of Cannon Financial Institute. I designed Monday Morning Mojo to provide you with a weekly spark, a push, and motivational insight to live your best life. Thanks for joining. Greetings Cannon Nation, it is Phil here with episode 668 of Monday Morning Mojo. Last week I was on another Delta Airlines flight. I had taken my seat and was flipping through a magazine. An actual magazine. I wasn't looking at it online, I had the paper there in my hand. It was a [00:01:00] great feeling, actually.
But as I sat there, a gentleman walked up and said he had the seat beside me. I stood up while he removed a sports coat. I made just a casual comment. I said, wow, nice jacket. And as I made that comment, he turned and looked me dead in the eye and said, Thank you. I appreciate you saying so. After he got his jacket hung up and took his seat, he began working on something.
And then he turned and engaged me in what became a 90 minute conversation. It was a delightful discussion. Very nice individual. But as we were wrapping up our conversation, as we were about to exit the plane, and as he was slipping the jacket back on, he said, Really appreciate your comments on my jacket.
Now, that encounter caused me to think just a little bit. What was it that was so special to him about a [00:02:00] compliment made by a perfect stranger? Well, the magic is in the recognition and the affirmation that something that he probably spent not a small amount of money on actually was of good taste.
Kendall tool is a professional boxer. She is a former Peloton leader of biking and exercise classes. She now has her own fitness online program. She recently made comment that. Kind of speaks to this issue overall. Her comment was that she had been in a gym working out and a lady had come up to her and said, I love your workout clothes.
She said she turned to her and told her basically the same thing because in fact she did love them. Uh, what the other individual had on. And Kendall went on to say that there may be [00:03:00] nothing as important for people to be affirmed. For people to be recognized that they are working in the right direction or have made positive choices.
And to have somebody else pick that out and let them know that they too recognize what's going on. Now, to this point, of course, we've talked about clothing and being complimentary of people in their satoral decision making. But really, what I want us to focus on is the fact that complimenting and affirming and recognizing other people pays tremendous dividends, not just in the psyche of that individual we compliment, but in how they then go through their day.
You know, we've talked before that if, if we want to see positivity in the world, well, we first got to exude that positivity, but it's the same thing in helping [00:04:00] other individuals be more complimentary, having other individuals be more engaged with each other. By simply taking a few moments to offer that pat on the back, offer that fist bump, offer that high five, and let people know that you appreciate them, that you recognize their effort.
You know, it's a basic human need, uh, that, that need of, of recognition, that need of affirmation. But as we go through our day to day life, sometimes we're just so busy getting through them that we fail to take the moment to let somebody else know, hey, great job, or hey, you know, nice bike, or hey, what a wonderful jacket you've got on.
Just taking the time to be intentional. And that recognition of our fellow men and women, letting them know that, you know, we feel that something that they are doing deserves [00:05:00] that compliment, man, how far can that go? It certainly makes us feel better when we offer compliments to other people, you know, that's, that's one of the beauties of it, but in watching the facial expressions and the body language of somebody else on receiving a compliment.
And then watching what they then do and recognizing and complimenting others. Well, that's the, that's the magic. That's when the, the beauty of interpersonal relationships is really manifested. So, I want to challenge you all this week to find three or four opportunities to recognize somebody else for an activity that they're involved in, for a clothing decision that they've made, the fact that maybe they've lost some weight, or the fact that They are just a good human being.
Take that time this week to recognize those individuals and then watch how those individuals then carry forward. If you want to be the light, if you want to see the light in others, [00:06:00] complement that activity. It'll go a long way. Monday Morning Mojo is a production of Cannon Financial Institute.
