College is expensive. This, of course, is no surprise. The issue is how families can afford college, and what tools are at their disposal to make this costly expense a bit more manageable.

In the 1971-72 school year, average tuition and fees at a public four-year college cost only $428. By 2014-2015, tuition and fees had ballooned to $9,139.
